The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday. With that announcement comes the return of the official Oscars App. The app allows you to prepare for the big event, make predictions and view the ceremony live with more coverage than the television broadcast. It even allows you to attend the A-list after party — virtually, that is.
FREE FROM THE APP STORE
The app, downloadable for free at the iTunes App Store, is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod. It was developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Disney/ABC Television Group’s Digital Media Team to be an interactive companion to the Oscar viewing experience.
BEFORE OSCAR NIGHT
As the big event approaches on Sunday, Feb. 26, you can prepare by accessing insider Oscar buzz. You can also watch movie trailers and exclusive videos, including “On The red Carpet,” a KABC-produced series on Oscar fashions hosted by Rachel Smith.
DURING THE AWARDS CEREMONY
Watching the Academy Awards show has never been as comprehensive. There are more than a dozen video streams from backstage and on the red carpet.
By using the its DIRECT mode, the app allows you to select any of six camera angles of the action and zoom in as close as you want.
The app’s “My Picks” game allows you to predict the winners in each category before the envelope is opened. By sharing your picks on Facebook, you can compete with your friends. The app automatically refreshes and keeps score as the winners are announced.
AFTER THE SHOW
Following the show, the Oscars App allows you access to to the famed A-list after party, the Governor’s Ball. A live video steam from the party lets you rub virtual elbows with the stars as they celebrate on Hollywood’s biggest night.
