It’s tax crunch time again. The free IRS2Go app is not new, but last week the IRS announced an update to the useful app. The new update includes informational videos on YouTube, transcripts and access to other online resources.
The previous version of the app was first available in 2011 and was downloaded more than 350,000 times. Mostly, it was useful for checking the status of filed tax returns. The functions of that app all remain in the updated version, but users can now also access videos, view news feeds and order transcripts from the comfort of their mobile device.
IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said:
“The new smartphone app provides an easy way for people to get helpful information about their taxes. IRS2Go reflects a wider commitment at the IRS to find innovative ways to serve taxpayers in a rapidly changing world.”
The 2.0 version of the app basically adds three new tools:
The app allows users to view informative YouTube videos on a variety of tax-related subjects directly on their smartphones. The videos are available in several languages, including American Sign Language.
The new news feed will display the latest news from the IRS website as soon as it becomes available.
This interface is used to order transcripts of returns. The transcripts are a record of the information entered onto the return, exactly as it was entered. Transcripts are delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.
The previous functions, still available on the new version, include:
Check the status of any filed return from your mobile device. Status updates are available three days after a return is accepted by the IRS, if it was e-filed. Status updates are available after four weeks for mailed paper returns.
This function offers daily tax tips during the tax preparation season.
This section of the app lets you follow the government agency on Twitter. The IRS Twitter feed, @IRSnews, provides updates and information on tax related topics, such as changes in tax laws.

The app is available free for both the Apple or Android platforms. The Apple version is available at the Apple App Store. The Android version can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace.
